9 Tips and Tricks to Improve Your Social Media Experience

Written by Zaahn Johnson | Oct 9, 2015 3:48:00 AM

Here at The Kingdom, we live and breathe social media. Here are some excellent tips from our Adelaide social media experts on how to make the most out of your social media experience - be it for business or pleasure.

1. LinkedIn

Did you look at your feed in LinkedIn and see posts from 17hours ago? Seems strange that you would not be seeing the most up to date posts from the people you follow, right?  This is because the view you are seeing is "Top Updates".

To change this view, find the three teeny tiny dots (as shown below).

You need to select Recent Updates - this will show you the most recent posts from your connections.

2. Search on hashtags

Whether it is Facebook, Twitter, Google+ or Instagram (Pinterest and LinkedIn do not support hashtags), try searching on a hashtag.

Instagram is brilliant for searching. You can search for people who have posted nearby - very useful for a business if you want to increase your brand awareness and grow followers.

3. Do NOT Disturb.....

If you have an iPhone, you can schedule downtime on your phone starting and ending at a certain time.

Sick of the constant noise of social media buzzing away, or even waking up in the middle of the night because you have forgotten to turn your phone on silent? You can set your phone to automatically switch to do not disturb at a certain time - for me it’s 10 pm -7 am.

This helps you implement a no-technology-before-bed-regime, which can help to improve your sleep.

You can also allow certain phone numbers to get through regardless of whether it is on do not disturb by listing them or putting them in your favourites. You can also allow numbers to be loud on their second attempt in case of emergencies.

It's simply under settings, do not disturb.

4. Facebook business pages

Use your insights! Learn when the best time to post is and discover the age demographic of your likers. This sounds obvious I know, but it’s fantastic to go over it and realign your strategies accordingly.

5. Find industry thought leaders

It might be through a hashtag search or that awesome speaker you saw at your last conference. Add them on Twitter to keep up to date on what they are doing, what innovative practices they are interested in and also how they are presenting themselves online. You'll get some great ideas that you can apply to yourself and your business.

6. Hug your haters

If you have a business Facebook page and someone makes a complaint, engage them! Find out what the issue is and how you can resolve it. Encourage them to take the discussion onto a less public forum like an email or phone call so you can resolve the issues. Convert that hater into a brand advocate when you solve the issue and make them feel special.

And, if after all your attempts to resolve the issue they are still insisting about being nasty in public, offer a polite response that you are available via email but will no longer be engaging on the social platform.

Haters gonna hate. Shake it off.

7. Use images on every post you create

Heaps of people miss out on a valuable opportunity to engage by posting content on social media without an image! Images can allow you to capture someone’s attention in the bustle of a Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn feed. Choose something that’s eye catching. But please, no cat memes unless necessary.

8. Hide that unwanted contact

Are you constantly receiving information in your Facebook feed which you don’t want to see? Like that friend who is getting all the things you want, a chronic oversharer or even a recent flame, but you don’t want to block or unfollow that person (just yet)?

You can hide it from your news feed. Easy-peasy.

Just click on the top right-hand corner and click "hide this post". This will help fewer posts like this popping up in your feed.

9. Share the love

If you have a positive business experience with someone, endorse them on LinkedIn. This helps build goodwill between the two of you and in time can help strengthen business relationships. On the other hand, don’t be an endorsement binger. Make sure that when you endorse someone, you feel like you could vouch for that person.
